New York Yankees Position Battles Update (3/11/10)

March 12th, 2010

Today's Yankees game against the Atlanta Braves has been rained out, so this is a perfect time to take an updated look at the position battles this spring.

The pitching continues to be a big focus, as Joba Chamberlain has struggled in his two appearances so far. Nick Johnson has come back from a brief injury and is performing well— as is Curtis Granderson. See their battle and the others at Double G Sports.

  1. Fifth starter battle: Chamberlain struggling big time, Hughes has been OK, but Aceves performing the best so far.
  2. No. 2 hitter battle: Johnson and Granderson battling it out.
  3. Bullpen: Robertson struggled a bit and Albaladejo has been nothing short of terrible.

Analyzing the Possibility of Torry Holt to The Chicago Bears

March 12th, 2010

While Torry Holt was making his rounds at ESPN , getting ready for his eventual post-NFL career on NFL live and SportsCenter, an interesting proposition was made.

He is still a decent wide receiver, and with his former head coach working as the offensive coordinator, Holt should be given a serious look by the higher-ups in the Chicago Bears organization.

He still has good legs and runs some of the crispest routes in the business and has some solid hands, not to mention he can help the young receivers in Chicago learn Mike Martz's complex system.

The biggest issue that plagued the Bears last season and undoubtedly caused at least a few of Jay Cutler's 26 interceptions was route running, and that is the one thing that Holt prides himself on.

Having Holt there to teach the young receivers like Johnny Knox, Earl Bennet, and Devin Aromashodu the intricacies of route running could be invaluable to the future of the Chicago Bears.

But Holt isn't just a teacher, he still has the ability to be a viable option in the passing game.

ESPN said that his ceiling last season was around 500 yards, but he produced just over 700 yards despite not catching a single touchdown.

This isn't just fantasy talk though, Holt talked about the possibility of coming to Chicago on the Waddle and Silvy Show on ESPN radio recently, and he also talked about going to Chicago on SportsNation recently.

"This year I would again consider coming to Chicago and helping that football team out, helping Jay Cutler in terms of helping him get settled in that offense and give him a quality and consistent weapon play after play along with Hester and Aromashodu and Knox and Bennett and Forte and Olsen, I mean the list goes on and on with the talent that they have," Holt said. "I think I could fit in really well with that ball club and add a really good veteran presence."

There has been article after article asking the Bears to trade for Brandon Marshall or Anquan Boldin (although the Boldin ship has sailed), but adding the much cheaper receiver could be just as helpful.

The Bears would be foolish to not take a look at the 34-year-old veteran receiver.  Holt had eight straight 1,000-yard seasons under Mike Martz when he was with the Rams, and though a reunion likely won't offer the same statistics, it could be highly beneficial for all sides.

After spending big money early in free agency, adding a veteran for cheap could have effects lasting years, as he could help bring along the young receivers in the complex Martz system.

Will the Bears make this move?  Maybe or maybe not, but if they don't at least make contact with Holt's camp, they would be making a big mistake.

Joshua Clottey-Manny Pacquiao: New Trainer, No Problem for Clottey

March 11th, 2010

SOURCE: http://www.examiner.com/x-5699-Boxing-Examiner~y2010m2d24-Lenny-The-Locksmith-DeJesus-key-man-in-Clottey-corner-against-Pacquiao

To continue my look at the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight, I am going to look at the trainer for Clottey. Everyone knows about Freddie Roach but few people know about Lenny DeJesus, the trainer for Clottey.

Normally Godwin Dzanie Kotey would be the head trainer for Clottey, but he was refused a U.S. visa. So DeJesus has taken over.

Who is Lenny DeJesus you ask? He is a renowned cutman and lead trainer for Joshua Clottey. He has plenty of experience in the fight game.

He was an amateur borough champ at the age of 16. Then he got some corner training from Angelo Dundee, Eddie Futch (Freddie Roach’s mentor), and Al Gavin.

He was actually the cutman for Pacquiao when he lost to Erik Morales. He has worked the corners of legendary fighters Roberto Duran, Wilfred Benitez, Wilfredo Gomez, and Hector “Macho” Camacho.

He seems to have a solid resume and while he may not be the most recognized trainer in the world, he is well respected. Matchmaker Johnny Bos praises DeJesus as a solid boxing man.

So even though Clottey is missing his main trainer, it seems he is in very good hands with DeJesus. I do not know what their game plan is, but it appears that Clottey should have confidence in his trainer.

He may have some insight into Pacquiao’s style of fighting as he was with him, but even without that, he learned from some of the best.

It seems that the gap between Roach and DeJesus isn’t as large as some people think. They both learned from Futch and DeJesus spent some time with the best out there.

Although Roach is the world's best trainer, he may have a harder time than usual outsmarting DeJesus.

The Boston Celtics Must Look In The Mirror To Find Redemption

March 11th, 2010

The look on Rasheed Wallace's face says it all.  The Celtics cannot find their way out of this vacuum of ineptitude.

The Memphis Grizzlies held the Celtics to a 12-point first quarter and dominated the game.

Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, and to some extent Michael Conley, simply got whatever shot they wanted.  Paul Pierce and Ray Allen continue their offensive funk and the Grizzlies took advantage of their lack of athleticism.

The Celtics look like a team that is emotionally drained, a dangerous position to be in. They have two choices: they can either collapse or find the added resolve that is needed to get through this.

To their credit they are not pointing fingers, but something is amiss on Causeway Street.

The March Hare would be proud of this schizophrenic group because opposing teams continually knife through Boston's porous defense. The players have to take ownership and do more than go through the motion of playing defense.

For a team that has championship aspirations, Boston cannot grasp the level of play that is necessary to get there.  March is supposed to bring the magic of being green to the forefront.

The boys in green should be flashing their green power and vanquishing foes with their defensive intensity, but it has yet to happen.

There is a mindset that has to come over this team, the kind of mindset that requires them to look at themselves through the looking glass.

It will reveal their true nature, be it champions or just plain chumps.

Fantasy Basketball Box Score Breakouts: March 9

March 11th, 2010

Here’s a look at some fantasy basketball players that blew up the box score last night.

Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia 76ers

Holiday is in a nice groove. He dropped 21 points on the Pacers. Would like more than his four assists, but still a solid effort.

Brandon Rush, Indiana Pacers

Rush had 24 points and nine rebounds. He’s been in double-figures in four of his last five games, averaging 13.2 points and 6.2 rebounds.

Dahntay Jones, Indiana Pacers

Jones added 25 points. He’s been all over the place though and as a riskier play.

Al Thornton, Washington Wizards

Thornton had 15 points and nine rebounds against the Rockets. He appears safe to use again after his mini-slump.

Nick Young, Washington Wizards

Young added 18 points. He’s not worth adding though.

C.J. Miles, Utah Jazz

Miles scored 26 against the Bulls, draining six three-pointers in the process. He’s averaging 13.8 points and 2.2 three-pointers in his last five games.

Brad Miller, Chicago Bulls

Miller continues to quietly produce. He had 20 points against the Jazz.

Carlos Delfino, Milwaukee Bucks

Delfino had 19 points and eight rebounds against the Celtics. He’s averaging 15.6 points and 8.6 rebounds in his last five games.
